Hello everyone, I'm considering making an offer for this coin and before proceeding I wanted to ask an opionion to those who are more experienced. Does it seem authentic? What can be its realistic value?

Thanks so much

The "tribute penny" is a favorite of forgers and has been for so for eons.
Silver is not my forte but the coin looks good.
I am surprised the seller is content to call it VF and not a higher grade.
I cases like this my feeling is to ask if you trust the seller ! While not every coin can be traced back to a reliable source some sellers are more trustworthy about the merchandise than others.
I think the coin is probably good but will leave the final word to others with more experience in high end silver.
I would assume the price tag is many many thousands of 'lire' !

I agree with FR, this does appear to be genuine and a excellent example of the type in high grade. It appears struck and not cast.

Looks real to me.

One thing: Your location is "Italy". It's one of my favorite places to travel, but not for coins.
Be advised that there are strict import/export laws regarding ancients.
So make sure you get the proper documentation from the seller.

You can always use acsearch for important coins like this and just typing in the weight you get the coins past sale. Has to be there the coin is too important unless the new buyer changes the facts which would be an issue. NN out of Austria sold your coin back in 6/8/2017 for 325 Euros. So with the conversion and the buyers premium you can assume the buyer paid about $450 to get it to the USA. Now they have to make a profit and did wait for the coin to get through the tedious Austrian Customs office so if they were decent people they would be happy with you paying them $600 in my opinion.

the odds of getting this coin for less than $500 are slim. Someone at some point in history decided that the Bible referred to these coins specifically. Since then, they have enjoyed a much higher price tag than they probably deserve, IMO. Any medium to upper scale auction house will have a handful of these at all of their auctions - I've taken bites, but have yet to win one at a "good" price.

Finn235. If you think about it, if the buyer keeps a copy of the printed auction from NN I linked to with the coin he has documentation that Marcus Naumann authenticated it. So if he wills the coin to his kids they will guarantee find someone to pay what he paid for it. So as long as you are willing to lock up money for years, which we all do with IRAs and retirement accounts, this is one coin that is really just an investment. Your kids never want the collection as much as they smile as you try to tell them about coins during a long lifetime. That is how I buy so many estates in bulk. As Thomas Merton said, you can't own anything in this world, you can destroy it or keep it from other people for a long period of time. So hopefully he gets to look at it for 30 years and if he plans well this will be the one piece the kids can't help sell correctly and it is a wash. Hopefully.
