Hi all.

I have been looking at an 1855 Gold sovereign and noticed that the head of queen Victoria is "upside down" I have read a bit about upside down heads and found on some coins it was normal but am not sure about this particular coin.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Also this is the coin with the horse and knight on the obverse.

Regards
Luke

Yep, upside down for that era is normal. Like American coins.

From the Veiled heads onwards (1893) they use the same orientation as they do today, IE they flip sideways. Not sure about the jubilees, I can't remember.

G'day,
also, the side with St George & the Dragon is the "reverse".

Thanks Peter

Sorry I'm always mixing the two up, I suppose the more I get used to handling the coins I will begin to get it right.

'Heads' is always Obverse; at least, thats how I've always remembered it... Were kinda lucky in Australia/Commonwealth in that our Obv/Rev is so simple to keep track of. Things get harder when coins DONT have this sort of standard Obverse (eg, German); even harder STILL when some publications choose the reverse of others! :)

LukeM, you pondering getting yourself a Gold Sov? Or do you already have one? Pics!! :)

Obverse - Heads
Reverse - Tails

I used to call the reverse the front and the obverse the back before I knew anything, the 'front' was more interesting

Yes I think this Gold Soveriegn is at a store Zaggy, There's ONE for sale up in the Toowoomba coin dealer, $250 horse Rev. couldn't see obv

Actually this Coin is my own. My parents got it for me when I was very young and I have recently been taking a close look over it. I can't scan this coin in as it's in a 2x2 case and it comes out all blurry and unrecognizable.
