I'm definitely no Half Cent expert, but what exactly makes you think it's counterfeit, Silverdollar? It just looks beat up to me.

The 8 should be above the 1 not below. Clear fake. Sorry

Reverse is correct for an original 1831 but the date is wrong as noted above. 1831 was a proof-only year, although some may have escaped into the wild. As a result, it's a favorite of counterfeiters then and now to satisfy collector demand (there are two restrikes and numerous cast fakes and electrotypes as well as more recent spark erosion/transfer die counterfeits.)

Sad but true. These are seen frequently, so I can certainly understand why you asked.

There are serious collectors for early counterfeits. This one could fetch a few hundred dollars, give two interested bidders.

ExoGuy is right, but I would recommend authentication first to ensure that it is a contemporary counterfeit and not a modern copy that has been "antiqued" to look like a beat-up genuine coin.

Hi. Thanks all for all your advice. How would I go around authenticating it. Reckon mum would have had it for at least 30 years. I'm in the UK.

I think ICG and SEGS (both in the US) authenticate contemporary counterfeits.
