*** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. Titles are Important! ***Bought a grab bag of mint nickels still in cello to test a theory. TNG, has probably done this, but I have never handled a whole lot of MS coins from mint packs, rolls yes, but a nickel in a roll came from a bg sometime, too much chatter. Well sorry to say, with the exception of 8 of 100 had a full visible five steps without any flaws, there were many close but no cigars: of the 8, 5 were in the 80's and early 90's, one was a 2007D, this is one of the three best, an 89D: A 1971D 5-step+?: I think the best of the bunch, I see 6 full steps through loupe with no broken lines, there is a mark but doesn't cut into detail under loupe. a 1973P:

I've seen reference to where Jefferson nickels are recognized as having 5 full steps 1938-1989, and six from 1990- present..it's mentioned in the nickel price guide in Numismatic News..I' ve always questioned that.and I have came across some gems ,six stepsIMO,, from mid 40's - 50's..thanks for sharing..

It is difficult to find some four step in some 50's even, they reused and overworked the reverse dies and working hubs way too much so that by the early 60's they were drastically needing to redesign. I don't get real excited by the five step of the 80's/90's and especially the newer ones, is common to find in circulation even.

I think the 6FS is a no-go. I see 5 steps and a big lump at the bottom. I don't really get into FS, but if I do, I'm a purist. If you were to step up onto Monticello's portico, you would have to take seven steps upward from ground level.

IMHO ,I'm not seeing any full steps . Perhaps I'm more of a purist than spruett001 .

A fresh, well hubbed die is needed to clearly strike all of the steps. It would also help if the coin itself is MS63 or better.

Well, Holy Bummer. Several close.
PCGS might FS. NGC sure won't.
Hopefully the learning experience was worth some of the price.

Full steps in mint set coins isn't that tough. These are struck with new dies under higher pressure.
Of course, this depends on the specific date and many are scarce with FS.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.
