Hello,
I'm currently going back through my collection which is pretty good size, and making sure I inventory everything I have. My question is if pictures are necessary for inventory if I'm not insuring my coins? At this time it is cost effective to add my coin collection to my policy because I collect very common coins that aren't really worth a whole lot of money. I have tried the whole website thing but nobody cares or looks at the website but me so that's out. Any thoughts or opinions?
Thanks, Rich Rich M. - Collector since 2008

Short answer, no, at least not for me. The only reason for me to take photos is to share them here on CCF.

I prefer them as I have my coins in the bank and that way I can look at them. I use Coin Manager.

I have two sets, one for raw and one for TPG. But I wouldn't photo anything less than $50 value myself. You would need to decide on your own break point.

It's up to you but I have been doing all of mine this past winter and will try and finish next winter. Right now I'm over 4000 pics but that is both sides.

I would say to have a general photo of your collection, but you don't necessarily need a high resolution closeup of both sides of each coin. For the more valuable ones, you might want to. For the more common parts of your collection I would still take a photo but more of a group shot. If you have them in 2x2s in a binder, just take a quick snap of each page or page spread (so that you get the front and back). If they are in tubes, just lay out the tube and take a single shot. Insurance is one reason, but another would just be so that you can find what you are looking for in a pinch by flipping through photos instead of books, boxes, or tubes.

I guess it depends how picky you are or how much time you have on your hands. I use CoinManage as well. It's fast, easy and cheap. I actually forget what coins I have and where I have when stored; i.e; albums, tubes, slabbed, etc.. The database takes me right there and tells me. Plus it adds an additional level of security for insurance purposes.
