Nice pickup - I need one of these for my Indian collection, but never bid high enough. They are very iconic coins.

Nice coin Ron. Is there an object in front of the lion or is that just an irregularity in the flan?

Yes Dave, A Chaitya hill lower left and a swastika in the upper right. Worn on this example.

Nice coin Ron!

Also above the elephants back there is a Chaitya hill (3 tier stupa) with crescent above, you can just make it out..
Maybe you know, but there are other styles of this coin with the animals facing in different directions possibly something you'd be interested in?
The elephant signifies "strenght and steadfastness' and the lion "proud and majestic"

It is said that the odd shapes of these coins are due to clipping before or after minting to control the weight..

Thanks for sharing Paul
