Are the letters on the obverse and reverse of this coin erased from wear and tear or from some minting error along the edge of the coin?
Could it be some kind of broadstrike error? The L, I, and Y are all missing completely.

A broadstrike is a coin that was struck without the collar around it. So a broadstruck coin is larger in diameter than a normal struck coin and on coins with a reeded edge the reeding would be missing because this is applied by the collar when the coin is struck. So look at the diameter and look for reeding on the edge.

This coin was minted in 1917 and the reeded edges no longer exist on this coin.

What about the diameter? That's the important part.

It's just extreme wear. Nothing unusual.

Thanks,
Bill

Unfortunately, it appears to be a very worn out coin that has seen better days.
