I was going thur some of the coins my mother in law had put back. to look at the other SBA dollars I have this one looks like it could be a near rim date?

Sure looks like one to me.
I think the MS ones bring a little premium.
Not sure on the circs. Probably something anyway over face value.

It is:-) ! It is more known now as "wide rim" as opposed to "narrow rim". The near date, far date terminology is used but is fading away:-)

It is also fair to say that they are not as rare as they were once thought to be. Still a nice find but as S.B.As were being released more into circulation (if you want to call it that) back in 1999 (the year they minted more SBA dollars) , more 1979 P "wide rim" dollars emerged.

I saw or read somewhere that FR has like bags and bags of SBAs sitting in their vaults because they severely overestimated demand.

MD that maybe very true they push that coin hard and most them were spent as quarter and jammed coke machines all the time back in the 80s.
