Thanks John , I will try and find a scale to weight it later . I don't own one so any hint of what else I can do to check if it's plated or not ?

I have a coin counter machine so I'm assuming as long the machine sort the coins by weight it's plated because when I put it inside the machine goes directly to the penny box, well will keep it anyway lol

Quote: what else I can do to check if it's plated or not ? Weighing your coin is definitely the fastest and easiest way to determine if it is a cent that someone plated (as opposed to being struck on the wrong planchet). However, since you ask, there are other, surface chemistry analyses (e.g. X-ray fluorescence or Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy) which could be used. Unless you work at a university science department, these other options are likely going to be much less convenient than purchasing a $20 scale.

You can also look at slabbed examples for comparison. John1

I doubt it's on a dime planchet. It's too well struck; the strike would appear soft if it was on a dime planchet. Less metal available to fill the striking chamber.
Does it feel "greasy"? If is coated with mercury then you have a toxic situation.

Looks like it was plated to me. You'll have to weigh it on a scale to find out the weight.
Errers and Varietys.

A dime planchet should show the copper clad layer in the middle as well (Unless it were a silver planchet, but that would be extremely unlikely in 1988). Your coin shows a solid color on the edge. Also, since a dime planchet is smaller than a cent, true examples usually show missing details around the perimeter, such as the rims and "In God We Trust", since the planchet isn't big enough. Your coin appears to be fully struck, and is not missing any detail. So I'm pretty convinced it is just a plated coin.
