Numismatic News - Just as some coins can be sleepers, and others sleepers with very little chance of waking up any time soon, coins can also be overrated. The contention has been made that the 1821 Coronet Head large cent is not as good as previously suggested, making it an interesting coin to study.

What has always drawn collector attention is the 1821's mintage of 389,000, which is significantly below other regular Coronet dates. The 1823 is tougher but had no recorded mintage, as its total was included with the 1824. So for the period from 1816 through 1839, the entire run of the Cornet Head design, the 1821 has the lowest mintage.

Excellent read. Thanks for posting it.

I have a 21, but it's "only" a 45.

"The contention has been made that the 1821 Coronet Head large cent is not as good as previously suggested".

What does that even mean? "Good" as what? "Good" in what context? Sorry but I don't get this article...

Large Cents and Half Cents was the topic of my coin club last evening. I brought my collection of large cents which is about 42 different dates. There was very little interest in this series. One of the dealers present agreed that large cents are not very popular at all. From a historical standpoint I don't understand why there is such a lack of interest in this series. BTW my 1821 is maybe AG3 condition.

Many collectors, and dealers, have this hang up that "if it isn't gold or silver it ain't squat". Yet one of the largest and most scholarly groups in numismatics is dedicated to the early coppers. In depth study of the early coppers is also one of the oldest endeavors in American numismatics with books being published as early as the 1860's. They aren't popular with the flippers of the people looking for a high return on their "investment", but they are popular with many serious numismatists.

@Conder101 you are absolutely correct about gold or silver collectors. At every meeting of my club there is a portion where members can show and tell their new acquisitions and all they show are gold and silver coins. I'm the oddity there because I have many different coins in my collection.

It's okay that they're not into copper -- more for me to collect ;)
