At first glance, this looks like an ordinary, run-of-the-mill, very circulated 1956-D
Lincoln Cent with lots of damage collected during its lifetime.
On closer inspection, though, there is something not quite right. On the obverse, there are slight impressions on the back of Lincoln's head, neck, and back that look like the feathers of a bird's out-stretched wing. Not like the feathers of the Eagles on the reverses of many
US coins, where the wings are often stretched out but also bent so that the wing tips are near the bird's feet. I can't find any similar pattern of feathers on
US coins, commemoratives, or tokens from pictures in the
Red Book.
There are several other small areas of apparent wing-like images incused into Lincoln's profile, and a few similar details on the reverse that could be due simply to normal impact damage, but some of them do not look like the usual defects, imho.
It also seems that this coin could be an RPD and/or RPM, and the letters "O" & "D" in "GOD" also look "Repunched".
Sorry if the photos are not sharp enough to bring the markings out better. Can anyone make out what the imprints may be, and/or have an opinion about the possible repunches?
Thanks for taking a look.
