Just Need Some Insight On This - 1971 S Cent

Snooderpuff Valued Member United States 126 Posts	Posted 04/20/2018 9:46 pm I found this cent in some change a while back and held on to it because of it's off color. I did some online searching on it but I couldn't find anything that exactly matches it. The color is very light and golden. The weight difference seems a little off. The third picture shows a color comparison between the 1971 S cent and another cent, though it is actually brighter than the picture shows. The last pic shows the weight comparison between this cent and regular one. Any info you can send my way will be greatly appreciated. Report this Post to the Staff

Spence Moderator United States 34409 Posts	Posted 04/20/2018 10:03 pm I agree that the weight does appear to be a bit on the high side (nominal is 3.11 g with a mint tolerance of 0.13 g). Even taking into account the listed tolerance of +/- 0.02 g on your AWS model AMW-100 scale, this coin is running a bit heavy. Crazyb0 Rest in Peace 10197 Posts	Posted 04/20/2018 10:11 pm Try acetone soak, the rough looking surface seems like a clearcoat or nail polish or varnish. An overnite soak will take any coating off. Remember also that tolerances are .13g +/- 3.11...those are "recommended" NOT LAW! Plachchet stock may be thick rolled, a small variation in alloy mix, a lot of factors determine this variance. I take +/-1.0g as an the "odd" level, anything else is metal production normal variances...in other words, NO BIG DEAL! Even if some see big $ in their future! Sheesh! It is hard to see the color in the pics, but when looking through coppers, you will come across a wide variety of color variations depending on what the coin has been exposed to.
