When I first began collecting coins, I started with Lincolns and then, since my dad had some IHC folders, I looked in Indians. I soon learned about the rare 1864L cent.

But ever since I've been on this website, I don't think I've ever seen anyone mention it. Is this a real key or a semi-key? How do IHC collectors regard it? Please fill me in.

Thousānds exist. It's price is higher because of its popularity as a variety but it isn't hard to locate.

It is not really rare at all, with a mintage exceeding the later issues of 1871, 1872, 1877, and 1908/1909-S. But they were the first to carry the "L", and they were released without fanfare along with the no-L version, and so few escaped circulation, accounting for their high prices today in the upper grade levels. There's always one available in any grade for those looking.

Civil war variety, it's pretty popular overall.

Which can be said about the overwhelming majority of small cents

Rest in Peace

The only small cent that's truly scarce is the 56 Flying Eagle. All others, even 09-S VDB, 1877, 14-D, etc only require cash to buy one.

It is estimated that around 5 million were minted with the L on the ribbon
of the almost 40 million minted. It was a change also not discovered right
away by the public and also a great number of these particular coins ended
up in England. So those are a few reasons it is difficult to find a nice
example. So yes, if you add that variety to your IHC set it would be
noted as a semi key coin.

The L is so faint many people may have one and not know it.

A coin is not rare unless you have to wait a good while for an example to show up.
