Another One I Didn't Have Yet: Salonina

paralyse Bedrock of the Community United States 12057 Posts	Posted 04/22/2018 10:33 pm This one came my way and it's another that I did not have a coin of yet -- Salonina, wife of Gallienus, 256-258 AD or thereabouts. Billon antoninianus of 21mm. Obverse has CORN SALONINA AVG, a right-facing bust on a crescent; the reverse has VESTA AETERNA, Vesta standing left with Victory and a scepter. The only VESTA AETERNA reverse I could find is attributed to RIC V 71. If that's not correct, please feel free to let me know! Your coin was produced at only one imperial mint, and that was the mint at Samosata. The reverse type and inscription was not used on any other coins for Salonina, but the figure of Vesta standing holding the Palladium (statue of Pallas Athena in armor) was used on coins of some of the empresses going back to a posthumous issue for Faustina I, wife of Antoninus Pius. The only other coin for Salonina featuring Vesta holding the Palladium is an antoninianus minted in Cologne in which the goddess is seated; a type introduced under Faustina II. Several other coins for Salonina featuring Vesta show her standing holding a patera; a type that originates with the Severan dynasty. So you see, your coin really is special.
