Hi all! I recently got this 1925 S Buffalo nickel and upon looking at the mint mark it seemed a bit weird, possibly repunched, so I did some research, but am more confused by what I found. Cherry Pickers shows FS 501 as this: But PCGS shows it as this and Heritage's example is this (just like PCGS) Is cherry pickers wrong? Her is my coin , which looks like the MM on PCGS and the Example from heritage. I know the pictures are not the best (its in a slab so hard to photgraph) but the MM on my coin shows the same characteristics and placement as the PCGS and Heritage coins, but not the CP's coin. Mine also has the filled in upper loop that the PCGS and Heritage coins have but the CP coin does not. Any and all thoughts are appreciated.

It is very hard to tell with the image provided but I don't think yours is FS-501.
The picture from Heritage is small but it looks like the one in CP Guide, the PCGS pic doesn't look too similar but that is likely because that example is a late die state.

From what I can tell, yours is missing the definitive 2x at 5 o'clock. Placement is close, but remember mor than one die used/hand placed yaddyyada...yours may be damaged there too. Not on computer so can't triangulate mm. Any other markers found to match?

It is also hard to tell because your coin is well circulated.

Actually my coin is an AU 58, the heritage coin is an AU 55. Here are a couple more pictures. The optimizer really hurts the image quality. Upon looking at some other PCGS Certified examples on Heritage some look way different then others. On some the mint mark is close to the C of CENTS , on others it is not. Maybe I will just send it to PCGS and have them do a Variety verification for me and sav myself the headache. I really wouldn't care as much , but and AU 58 would be worth a lot of $ based on the last AU55 on heritage selling for $2350!!

As far as other markers, there are a row of raised dots that go up at an angle Just above the back hoof on many of the PCGS coins on Heritage and on mine. I did forget to mention that as well.

I have an extensive Buffalo nickel collection which I mostly acquired about twenty years ago. Almost all coins are encapsulated mint state coins which I never reviewed for Rpms or double dies before last week, when I bought a photo microscope. I found a few interesting pieces: two consecutively certified 1936 ms66s which might be DDO #1, one or two missing 38d Rpms, and a 1925s ms63 or 64 which looks exactly like yours. I am away for the day but I'll post a photo on Monday or Tuesday. Did you get yours recertified at PCGS? Mine is PCGS too...

Hi folks, Here is a picture of the S mint mark on the back of my 1925-S nickel. The coin is certified MS-63 1925-S by PCGS. Any thoughts on this being a known RPM? thanks, Mark
