I found this 1973 S LMC that the mintmark is visually smaller than the normal S mintmark for that year. I am including a pic of a 1973 S LMC that has a normal sized mintmark. Also included is a pic borrowed from VV with two styles of mintmark. If they are the same mintmark then why is one so much smaller? Again, when in doubt ask the experts!

It is a normal MMS-008. But why does it look different? Because the punches of the mint mark were slightly not exactly on top of each other. Not enough to create a RPM, but deeper making look wider. Just a strong correct punch. The next punch was a different shape.

Great question and answer! Shows how much hand punching of mint marks creates all these different varieties. Succinctly put as usual by Coop!
