Hi there from Arizona. I inherited a coin collection many years ago and never took much notice of any of the coins till recently. There's one coin in the collection that is very odd and I could use some help identifying what its errors are. The pictures aren't great, but I'll try to take better ones if need be.

Anyway, I have this 1964 5 Francs piece, and it looks pretty normal on both sides except there's a "ring" around both sides, with lettering and even images on both sides curving up into the "ring." If it were one sided, I'd understand the error, but both sides are like that, and the "ring" is fairly tall. The coin is definitely one solid piece.

Unfortunately, it's been rattling around in a coin jar for many years, so it's pretty banged up. But if anyone could help me understand what this error is, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

to CCF. Looks like someone started to make a ring out of it. It is called "spooning". Wait for a few pros to chime in.

Having attempted it myself, I can reasonably call myself a pro....
That definitely resembles a spooned coin (can be done with a hammer as well), moreover, I have not any reasonable explanation of what mint error could result in an outcome like that.

The only other thing is a Dryer Coin, but the rest would be affected to, this is a "spooned" coin, were once called "the poor man's wedding ring".
