Thought it looked pretty nice so I took a gamble. Toning is slightly odd, under sunlight it doesn't look like it would go details. I'd say it's AU58? Thanks.

I'm with @numismatic student, this looks like a proof vs business strike and impaired or low 60's - not much experience, sorry. But if you like the coin and it matches your collecting goals then
Rest in Peace

The only clear indication of rub is at the center hair lock on the obverse, so I'd definitely agree with your 58.

But the splotchy toning scares the check out of me.

Really beautiful coin otherwise.

I would call it a mishandled proof and grade it PR-63.

There were only 15 proof dollars minted in 1843. If this is one of them it is a $30k coin at least.

I'm sure it's a business strike. There's an in-depth website I used to determine whether it was a proof or not, and the '1' is too far right for it to be a proof

Edit: http://www.seateddollarvarieties.co...43-OC1.shtml

This was the website I used to determine proof vs business strike.

Thanks for providing the reference. I agree that the position of the 1 matches the business strike obverse die position for the "1". Coin appears then to have a very sharp strike from a very early die state impression. I would say MS62 proof-like. This may be among the first couple of strikes from fresh dies. Congratulations on the acquisition. I think you will be hard pressed to find a coin this fine, even in much higher grades.

58 here. It will be hard to resell due to the toning. I would venture to say that coffee was spilled on it at some point and the owner either didn't know about it or didn't care to clean it up. Might me a good candidate for an acetone bath followed by a hot water soak. If you do so, please update us with the results.

How would I go through with a hot water soak? I was under the impression anything but acetone harms the coin.

I've learned a lot on this one as well. Great learning experience.

PS. I will put this coin in acetone soon, as soon as I find a glass container wide enough for it to fit.

Try the hot water after the soak. I've had success with method on blood and beverage spill damage. I'm not talking about boiling hot water. Just hot water from the tap.
