I don't have nearly that kind of cash for a purchase right now, but it's fun to window shop

For the uninitiated, Leo II was the young grandson of Leo I (died 474) by Leo's daughter Ariadne and her husband, the general Zeno. Leo had no male heirs, so the seven year old Leo II became co-emperor with Leo on November 18 473, sole emperor briefly in his own right on Leo's death on January 19 474, but then elevated his father to co-emperor after a couple weeks, on February 9. Leo II died unexpectedly of illness the same year on November 10. Zeno was deeply unpopular, and was ousted thr next year by the usurper Basiliscus - this chaos in the East allowed Odoacer to depose Romulus Augustus in the West - formally ending the Western Roman Empire. For seekers of an "emperor set", these rare solidii are the only ones that unambiguously portray the young emperor.

It would be nice to have, but way too much money to spend on a small coin.

Nice coin!

But gold has never been my colour it clashes with my.......................wallet!

Interesting writeup Steve I didn't know this was the only type of coin that depicts the emperor..

What do you think it will evetually go for?

Thanks for sharing Paul

It's anyone's guess I suppose. A quick search on CoinArchives (not as complete as acsearch, but gives prices) shows a slightly lower grade sold at Gorny & Mosch last month for EUR 2,400. This one could go a lot lower - it doesn't have any bids yet, so it might not even sell! The two examples listed on Wildwinds went unsold a number of years ago.
