I came across this and immediately thought rpm but after checking in wexlers and not seeing it and there's one example on variety but the pic isn't that great, and also checking some earlier posts about the same coin on here, I couldn't really determine whether it is or not. I guess it's possible the bottom left corner got chipped like was mentioned in one of the other posts. I didn't know if anyone had concrete info that it was just a chipped punch or is that just the going theory and popular belief. The reason I'm wondering is because they all seem to have a broken post in the middle which makes the inside of the D look like it does but could that also be caused by two different punches overlappeing and distoring it to look that way? And also I have a pic that I traced lines across what look like two different angles backs of the D and after tracing them they intersect right in the middle which would leave you to believe that's what cause the serif at the bottom left corner. Maybe they we're just a hair off perfect center and that's why there isn't one at the top. The other thing is that if the die did chip, it would leave a rasied area akin to a die gouge. There would be more material not less. I'm prob wrong on all this but look forward to any info to put in the ole noggin. Also I forgot to mention that's I'm talking about is the bottom left corner of the mm. It has a serif on the corner. Thanks as always

I do see that notch on the bottom of the MM,but I think it is not a RPM. I see that on most if not all 1979's.Coop or crazybo can explain it. Just wanted to say your description and photos and colored lines are great. Wish all posters did that.

it's not an rpm , I found the same a year ago and coop's response to me was that it was a broken mint mark punch, and it's on a lot of 1979 coins.

Nope, not an RPM. It's a broken mintmark punch from being overused. This is very common for 1979 and doesn't carry any premiums, but it's still very interesting since it makes a great learning piece. http://www.error-ref.com/broken-punch/

Thanks for the input and compliments everyone. I read the stuff about a broken mintmark but if a piece breaks off the punch there would be more metal unless the master die that they made the mintmark off of was broken. But then to that point why isn't the back of the D straight? I know some are a little rounded but the back of this one looks like a V that has been flattened to almost straight. I'm not saying all this because I want it to be an rpmm and to convince myself. It's obviously pretty common. I just wonder if the master die itself was re-punched? Just my thoughts
After making this reply I read the error ref article you put a link to Errors and Var. and needles to say I prob should have read that first. Well at least I figured out what the cause was on my own through stuff I've learned from everyone on here so for that I say thank you to all the people who take the time to teach a moron like myself about this kind of stuff.

You're very welcome! You're not a moron. Your just starting to learn all of this stuff and it isn't easy at first. It'll take time to learn all of this. You're doing great so far and you're learning a bunch of stuff.

All denominations can use the same punch in a certain year. But the dies will show a damaged punch until they replace it.

Damaged punch issue that year.
A RPM will be taller:
