Odds are the collector has a habit of showing off his stuff, or yapping about it, or associating with low-lifes in some form. At the very least, he just left it laying around for an easy theft.

I'd not be too quick to blame the victim. The great majority of collectors I know, don't much tout their holdings. All too often, crooks learn something from family members, those close to the victim. Two burglary cases that immediately come to my mind involved the boyfriends of a granddaughter and daughter, respectively. In the case of the daughter, her boyfriend not only stole coins, he murdered both of her parents.
I don't want to blame the victim, but getting killed by family members for your goods counts as associating with low-lifes. Keep your mouth shut, the world can all be stunned at the reading of your will, instead.
