Hello CCF,

I just cut this coin out of a sealed mint set. It has proof like qualities and I found what looks like a "S" mint mark. Could this be a mint error or just an early strike?

Thoughts please!

Thanks,

Just damage on that area. The 1973-S were proof halves. This is not a proof half. It is a business strike half.

coop - You don't think it's strange that the damage (scratched area) looks almost identical to an "S" and is in the same exact area where an "S" mint mark would be on a proof coin?

It is just contact marks from a stack of coins hitting it. If it were an 'S' mint mark, it would be raised (not incuse as damage is) and the coin would be a proof coin. There were no business strike 'S' mint marks that year on the half dollar. I don't get excited about what it looks like it could be. I get excited when it is a real deal that is a variety.

It may "look" like an S, and it may even be in the right position for where and S would be, but it's also almost 3 times the size of what an S mintmark would be.

It's an interesting coincidence, but that's all there is for it, sorry.
