Cory: I'm very familiar with the guy who took those images that Crazy posted. On the 001, Take a look again at the lower serif. Do you see the split on the lower serif. The marks on the fields are just damage from the mint mark punch. They have nothing to do with the RPM.

Note the description on this die number:
From the Coppercoins site:
Quote:
Nice separation lines show in the upper and lower curves on this repunched mintmark.
From the variety vista site:
http://www.varietyvista.com/02b%20L...9SRPM001.htmClick on the link and read it. (S/S West) Now look at their images. They show three stages A-C.
What does that mean? That means that they have see three examples of varying die states or die events that they note as markers for this attributed die. Now look at their image of the RPM. Do you see why they call it a S/S West. Now on their image of the RPM, it shows a West spread. But on the coppercoins example, it is a later die state and that has worn off the die at that point. So it is not visible, but the mark on the lower serif is seen. Your coin is not showing any of this. You are looking at the broken punch issue. (but you are new and didn't know about the damaged punch issue) but the more questions you ask, the faster you will learn.
New point: Do you see the lines that Crazy put on the images for 001-003?
Do you know why they are there? They are showing the location of the mint mark. Note they are not on the same exact areas? That is because the images are of three different dies. Three different RPMs. So he is using them for identify locations of the mint marks. Also the mint mark punching can be in different directions also. But not again, the images are also showing a damaged mint mark punch issue. Some years start with a new one, it gets damaged and then replaced. So keep in mind this happens. If you wonder it was an issue, look at other examples from the same year/mint and see if normal and variety dies are also showing the same damaged mint mark damage. Hope this helps. Hang in there, you'll figure it out. I try to help all, when they got it figured out, then they help me help others out.
I want people to see what I'm seeing with my comments. When something isn't clear, I try to explain it better for you. Not just you benefit, also others who read may have the same question and were afraid to ask.
