It looks more like staining followed by continued circulation to me.. I go with industrial immersion of some sort.. Looks more like a dry stain as opposed to a wet stain too, like say brake shoe dust or graphite as examples vs oil or grease..

FWIW -- In all my years of metal detecting I've yet to pull a penny out of the ground looking in any way like the one displayed..
Copper holds up amazingly well beneath the roots unless in flea market type parking lots where oil and grease staining is common or in soil that causes copper reaction leaving everything from 'greenish' easy-wipe stains on through to same coin-defacing damage..
And zincolns look exactly like you imagine, only worse..
So just saying, is all..

It's been etched with a vibrating pencil and artificially toned by our favorite un-nameable garage imp! Can't you guys see that?

Quote: Looks more like a dry stain as opposed to a wet stain too, like say brake shoe dust or graphite as examples vs oil or grease.. ,and all high points of this coin has been worn down to expose the true copper color or someone deliberately tried to create a circulation cameo . Just My Opinion.
