Hello, was looking for some help with this George III coin. I'm hoping it's real but I have a strong suspicion it's fake just by how "weird" it looks. It also has some weird grooves and marks along the entire rim of the coin, which I took a picture of. Is this coin a fake? And if it is, can anyone tell me what the indicators are that it is? I'm trying to get as much knowledge about identifying fake coins as I can. Oh and two more quick questions: Is this the right forum category to ask if a coin is real or fake? And I have a bunch of other possible fakes I've gathered in my collection, Should I make a post for each one or post all the images together at once in one thread? Thanks all! *** Moved by Staff moved to a more appropriate forum. ***

Your coin is real. http://www.wnccoins.com/0003.htm Only as an example counterstamped coin A countermarked, punchmarked or counterstamped coin is a coin that has had some additional mark or symbol punched into it at some point during its career as a circulating coin. This practise is now obsolete.

Thank you for the info and the helpful link! Wow, Amazing to think this is an actual coin from George III, I was skeptical at first. Do you happen to know why the rim has those diagonal grooves though? was that done by the mint? I haven't really seen any other coins with that feature.

Welcome!
I agree there is nothing fake about your coin. It is just extremely worn. Maybe those diagonal grooves were meant to make it difficult to counterfeit? Hard to imagine in this day, but a penny bought a lot more back then.
It's a bit tougher to get a George III coin from the time of the American Revolution. If you want something with even more historical significance, keep an eye out for one of those!

Hmmm wondering if there is a way to tell the exact date even without the date on this one? Are they worth much without dates?

The date will be 1806 or 1807 - the only two dates it was made for circulation in this style. I think it is a penny by the proportions, but a diameter would confirm this. Either date is very common in wel worn condition on this side of the pond. I have a bunch of them in a local antiques shop for sale at 50p each (about 75c US).

Dorado - your counterstamped penny is interesting. I have a source that dates the counterstamp as "before 1853", but lists it on a 1797 penny. Do you know more?
