Okay, so I'm brand new here, and brand new at collecting. So obviously I'm in need of help lol. Trying not to make myself look stupid so please bear with me here...

I came across this quarter today, and it piqued my interest (for obvious reasons). At first glance I assumed it was like this from some sort of machine or another man made cause after production. But when I looked closer, the area on the head side that appears "scraped" away still has some distinguishable features, such as the D and the ponytail, that wouldn't still be visible if the coin had been damaged by something post production (which was what I thought looking at the other side). Not sure what to make of it!

Any thoughts?

that's should be a tough one..to me doesn't seem like a bad planchet since the scraping is over the design...at some point the design would reduce the marks in the heavy area...in other words the scrapes are above the design..

may have been in the road/parking lot....People would pick up a quarter fairly quick before too much damage..but I cant say and could be wrong...that happens

No one would ever look stupid by asking any question on this forum, that's the way we learn.

This is a damaged coin, it has happened after leaving the mint.It looks like it was jammed through some kind of feeder.

For a parking lot coin, its still pretty cool. I like how it's gradual from left to right. It's prob only worth about $.22 with what's left but I'd keep it just cause I think it looks pretty bad ass.

Thanks for the input everyone! My gut was saying parking lot, but the little details left on the front interested me. Oh well!

I agree with PMD, but not parking lot coin. It looks like it got jammed in machinery of some sort. One side (obverse) was stuck against something that created the impression and the other (reverse) was exposed to a moving element that scraped the coin and applied the pressure for the obverse impression.
