As some of you may know, I collect mint sets, rather than series. I like to see all of the coins that were issued together in the same year in my albums. This doesn't mean that I don't have complete series, but they occurred because of my year sets. I have all the Walkers and Franklins and Kennedy from 1934 to 1964, as examples, but that only came about because I wanted complete years from 1934-1964.
Picking the dates sometimes has to do with personal reasons - 1897 for my paternal grandfather's birth date, 1934 for my father's birth date, 1958 for my own birth date. Yes, I know my mother, and grandmother's should also be equally pursued, but I still have a ways to go on some of the dates I' m currently working on - 1853 and 1883 as two examples.
One of the reasons I pick particular dates is that I love to have lots of different types in a single year. Below I've done a table on all of the years where there are multiple types in a single denomination in a single year. It is surprising that there is only one instance when four TYPES (not varieties) occur - that being the 1793 Large cents, with four distinct types.
Even with only three types in a single denomination in a single year, there are only 6 instances where there are three types of a single denomination in a single year (also shown below). Examining those 6 instances shows that a couple of those dates are nearly impossible (or impossible) to actually complete.
The 1867 five cent denomination includes the
Seated Liberty half dime, with a mintage of only 8,625. The 1913 five cent denomination includes the Liberty (V) Nickel, which is, for all intents and purposes, too exclusive to consider.
I've included my own set of the 1883 Nickels in photos below. Those being one of the reasons I chose 1883 as a set date, and none of the gold for that date isvimpossible. The 1853, of course, has a huge number of coins, which may take me 20 years to complete, but that is at least half of the fun.
Please note that the table excludes commemoratives, goes only from 1793 to 1998 before the multiple quarter or cent per year extravaganzas, and may have some debatable inclusions (do the
Half Dimes count the same as a nickel for denomination?).
We all enjoy our own way of collecting. I just thought I'd share a bit of my own fun.
