So here is my story...

I found this ring metal detecting in the fall. It was about 4 inches down. I brought it home and cleaned it with jewelry cleaner and the thing sparkled with no tarnish. It was strong, I could not bend it, so I started Seeing $$$$$$$. I thought for sure it was a two toned gold braided Celtic women's wedding band.

I put a listing in my Home Owners Assoc's lost and found, since I found it on a path near my house. No one came forward.

So I took it to a local jeweler, who did a quick check and told me it was gold.

So I went to list it on ebay, when a co worker suggested I get it tested to see how much it weighs, the karat of gold and the size. They thought that it would help me sell it for a better price.

So she took it to her jeweler for me. The ring came back with a one side being grinded and the area looking like it had black soot on it. She said the jeweler said it was junk, and likely silver.

I take it home and throw it in the jewelry cleaner to clean the soot off and the braid piece that looked like white gold came out the color of gun metal. The gold braided pieces were still gold. Also the ring is now weakened and I can bend it when I squeeze it.

Not sure what happened. Oh Well. I am going to send it to a refiner with a bunch of scrap gold from my wife, maybe the gold braids are 10K?

Either way talk about a let down.
Rest in Peace

That is a bummer. I have found alot of stuff like that. It does get your hopes up only to be shot down. I guess that's what makes it fun. The jeweler did a scratch test on the ring. Here is a link for you that tells how they do the test.

I think when you dipped it the second time it ate up what little bit of precious metal that was on there.
