First of all HELLO! I'm new here, and found this site by google search.

OK, I just bought a 2005 Silver Eagle proof coin, and it has ripples in the shiny area on the right hand obverse. You can kind of see what I'm talking about looking at the photo. I've never seen anything like this, and am hoping someone can give me some insight. Is this a mint error? Does this add or subtract from the coins value? Any help would be appreciated. Updated with another photo that shows the ripple a little better. Hard to photograph this!
Thanks,
Doug

Strange, I am not sure, perhaps strike distortion of the metal or poor planchette? Although I don't have a 2005 here are 1986,2000,and 2007 for comparison;

I have a number of modern commemoratives as well in proof, but the surface "rippling" is much less pronounced than on your coin. I also don't think that it qualifies as an error, but I may be wrong!

Hope this can help out a little bit, and welcome to the forum!

Thanks for the reply and the welcome. I've never seen this on a proof before. Of course I think being a proof with the shiny surface makes it more pronounced. I was hoping this might be some kind of error and make this coin worth thousands;) hehehe Thanks again for the reply.

I've read several of the postings in the forum. Finding this forum was a great stroke of luck. I've not been collecting for long, so I might be asking questions from time to time that seem kind of dumb. Hope y'all will overlook dumb questions. Anyway thanks for the welcome:)
