Good day. Kindly assist with ID or lead on this coin. I found this coin while medal detecting a Anglo Boer war site (1899-1902) in South Africa.

Very odd place to find the hammered coin. The only reasoning I can give of how it ended up on this specific geography is the the British Imperial forces Indian colonial volunteers as stretcher bearers during the Anglo Boer war.

However the coin appears to be much older than the war and it is my hypothesis that it was probably carried as some sort of luck token by Imperial forces.

It appears to be a brass/Copper hammered coin. Have not weighed it, but can do so if of assitance.

It appears to my unlearned eye as if the "h" marking may be the Hindi marking for Semana (Shiva) but apart from that I am at a loss.

Many thanks in advance.

Sorry for the share links below but can't upload the images although they are 290kb Jpegs.

Welcome to the forum!

I am not an expert on this type of coinage, but hammered copper coins were being made in parts of India until well into the 19th century.
Measurements of the diameter (and eventually weight if possible) would indeed be helpful for whoever comes along to help you.
