That does not look like zinc rot to me, @kybgood4u. That coin looks to have been exposed to high enough heat to cause bubbles in the copper plating. It is still PMD and/or environmental damage.

I do metal detecting, and I find zincolns just like this frequently. If my calculations are correct, I'm pretty sure it take only a couple years to corrode to the point where big chunks are missing. Meanwhile, those indian heads and wheaties can be in the ground for 100 years and still at least maintain their original shape (and not look like pac man).

I wonder if it was subjected to enough sudden high heat that the zinc began to do localized boiling/vaporization? (Zinc boils at a lower temperature than copper melts)

Clipped to anode of arc welder, to answer/add to Conder's post, the zinc boiled up doing that

This looks like heat damage. It's Post Strike Damage ( PSD).
