I'm pretty new to this and may be corrected but judging by the reverse I think your suspicions of this being a token or charm of some type is warranted.

Definitely a charm; the symbols on the reverse are the "eight trigrams" of ancient religious significance. Not sure what the obverse reads, but probably something like "brings good luck/money"
