I'm trying to get dates off of some dateless Draped bust large cents. I can identify year ranges on some of them and a one or two dates... But the others I am having a hard time determining a date. Can I "acid date" a copper coin just to get a date off of it? The coins are pretty beat up and would only help the value if I can get a date or least know if it is a 1700's or 1800's. Help!

I think the acid dating of nickels procedure ( which I strongly dislike ) removes copper from the coins alloy which leaves a raised portion of the other metal used. ( nickel )

I don't think you'll have any success removing copper from a copper coin.
Rest in Peace

Truly expert collectors can sometimes use variety identification to determine date. Try putting a few good photos here with obverse and reverse, one coin at a time.

Ok so the draped bust large cents were minted in 1796, 1797, 1798, 1799, 1800, 1801, 1802, 1803, 1804, 1805, 1806, and 1807. There are 2 hair styles. 2 curls, and 3 curls. On 2 or 3 of the coins I can see that they are the 1st hair style, so I know that those coins are 1796, 1797, 1798, or 1800 (80 over 79) and the rest are unidentifiable. So I have been able to identify a few of them, and I know what I'm looking for.... But these coins are so far beat up, getting a date off of it would not ruin any sort of value, only help it.

All I'm asking, is there a way to get dates off of copper coins? Like for example, useing "acid dating" like we do on nickels. I'm not saying that acid dating will work for copper coins, but is there a tecnique like that, that I can use. Sorry if I wasnt clear the first time I posted. Ill try to post pictures in a bit.
