I would grade it at VF30. NGC? After some of their grades I have seen recently it could be anything.

I saw the grade.
NGC and PCGS are OK with au58 to ms65 and probably ok from Poor to VG.
Where they completely differentiate themselves from ICCS is the grades between Fine to AU55.
In this range, quite often their grade is laughable and borders on incompetent (such as with this coin).

Same subject, different coin. Borrowed this photo from Coins and Canada site. This was graded AU58 by NGC. Not even close. Looks like the high spots have been sanded down. Just more proof to buy the coin and not the holder.

It must be that preposterous, at EF45 it would be about par for NGC and not worthy of a topic.

Seeing the OP coin at AU-53 is disappointing and not consistent...Thw coin below is VF-35 NGC coin so I don't know how they got a AU-53 out of the OP coin.

Australia has an identical master die for the image for the Mackennal bust. Only 6 diamonds clearly visible in the headband of the crown This coin would be true VF grade (not + or -), (British grading). = F15 Sheldon.

Things are not always what they seem...Personally I think only looking at the crown and jewels to assess a grade is insufficient. Many weak strikes at higher grades that are ever so common in those years on dimes exhibit very weak headband features. Often the rim will say more about the coin's wear than will high points on the effigy. The first NGC coin here (although over graded) is weakly struck. I am pretty sure ICCS wouldn't knock it down below EF. The second coin has a better strike but more wear. Have a look at the difference in rim wear on both coins...I've crossed many coins from ICCS to NGC and I track it diligently...And yes at in mid grades NGC is more lenient but not as drastic over all as many on this board make it out to be. In the end none of it matters....What sells the coin in the end is someone's personal assessment of the coin they buy. If the coin is technically AU50 but has an eye appeal of a lower grade, than that's what it's worth. I'll start another post with some interesting results on my cross grades. ICCS EF-40 Below

A lot of You guys figured out why I made this "You vs TPG" thread. I have to say I am more than a little concerned with this one, its not unusual to see EF-45 coins in AU-53 plastic, but this coin would be one that I would have to have a bit lower standards to put EF-40 on. Though I don't think Ef-40 would be out of reason, this coin has, in My opinion nothing that qualifies it as an AU coin.

Not a week strike. The master die sent from The Royal Mint in London for the effigy of George V was sharper than that for the master die sent from the RM for Australian coins. This results (generally speaking) for working dies to also be a bit sharper than for Australian coins. Some weight for this argument can be seen for this coin. The reverse appears to grade higher, despite the high probability that both sides have been in the same environment, as far as wear is concerned. Other high points that have worn are: mustache beard below chin ermine on shoulder eyebrow band on orb of crown. The legend appears to be differentially sharper than the effigy, despite being somewhat protected by the rim. Rim is quite flat below the bust. Despite all of the above, I have reconsidered the grade: VF20 obverse, EF40 reverse. (both Sheldon)
