Since we have a pinned thread for "Discouraged Sellers" on here, I think we should also have one for "Discouraged Buyers" on here.

Yesterday, I received a lowball offer on an item, one where I would lost money on the transaction. It was auto-rejected as it fell below my 75% of my listing price threshhold. He made another offer, and while it made the 75% threshhold, it was still well below what I would sell it for. I offered him almost 4% off the original price. He then shot back a really snotty comment at me. Needless to say, I ended up adding him to my blocked buyers list. When I looked at his comments for sellers, he had only left one, and it was very suspicious NEUTRAL to say the least. As the seller states, "why would anyone make one?" in answer to him saying that he was sold a fake 1969-D quarter!

That @ lowball on the "Make Offers" was my rant recently. I will no longer use the SleezeeBay (my feelings of expression!)feature. I have products, not many anymore since finding another sales venue, that have languished for the past 8 months because I refuse to lower my pricing any more than I already have(multiple times and ways). Then ebay has the audacity to automatically, w/o my permission) to change the BIN listing to the Make Offer option at their minimum of 40%! I only discovered this when a "customer" offered me $38 on a $120 item! There even was one listing that I could change the offer % but not remove the Make Offer feature until cancelling and relisting.

For your question/rant about crappy offers, of course there will be those who want to make a Buck, go lowball, and sadly society seems to encourage these types of complainers even more. The day of true barter, I'm afraid, is over. To place an offer slightly below your intended, with intent to "deal" is rare...too much of the "wanting something for nothing" attitudes, gee, I wonder why...

Addendum: This baloney w/eBay is the main reason I do very little coin purchasing through them. They WILL make their money, it is THE way of business today, like it or lump it. The polices are geared towards sales at all costs, to buyers and sellers alike. Their fees can be atrocious if you don't mega-business through them, which does effect how one must sell/buy there. Too many folks seem to have gone the route of BINs nowadays, deals aren't to be had in abundance as 5-10 years ago. That is why I prefer on-line auctions. If you learn that "game", you can do well, whether you collect or flip (#1). Then learn about other ways of direct sales similar to eBay(#2) to resell that which you may have scored. As point of reference, have sold 7 times as much in 3 months as ebay and cleared 9% more profit. Go figure...

When I sell on ebay, which hasn't been much the last two years, I still do the old fashioned .99 start, no reserve, auction. Opens and closes Sunday about 6 PM CST.

No BIN, No Best Offer.

And ill get higher end prices for the exact same item than the competition selling BIN for a lower price. Often.

I know if I make an offer on a $200 item at $180 (10% off) and a seller comes back with a 4% discount at $192, you don't need to block me. I'd run every time I saw something you were trying to sell.

Many make offers that are very low.
I once had a $5 offer on a $20 item.

I've a friend who sells lots of world on ebay.

As a gag, I offered $50 on a $200 coin simply to be annoying. We've been friends for better than 30 years so I had no fear of him getting grumpy.

He accepted my offer but I really didn't want the coin as I'd already sold all my world and had no interest in starting again.

He offered me $25 as a buy back. I accepted.

At least I saved the postage costs

I kinda got check mated on that deal

It's called the art of the deal... A buyer, in my experience, would come back and offer say $185. I might offer $190, he offers back $187.50, and we have a done deal.

I'm honestly not sure why you would run from a 4% discount. On a coin selling for $848 earlier this year, I offered $750. He came back with $825 (not even 3% off). I responded back with $800 and we closed the sale.

Honestly, I don't get those very often. And they get auto-rejected anyways. I would estimate less than 5% of the offers I get on coins are below my 75% threshhold.

That said, the main point of this thread really wasn't the lowball offers. It was more to do with this person's comments and him or her possibly being a scammer. I mean who in their right mind would suspect someone of making a fake 1969-D quarter, let alone selling one?! The lowball offer he made me, and the subsequent snotty comments after my counter offer were the warning lights which led me to investigate him further... the comments suspecting someone else of selling them a fake common date coin were the red flag.

What is your alternate venue? I don't have a selling presence on ebay... I have never been comfortable with the model, especially since disputes are only resolved in ebay's favour... I have sold to my LCS but sometimes leaving him room for resell margin leaves me with nothing... Craigslist is not really an option since I am in a very small community so... How do you sell for reasonable numbers but eschew ebay?

One, Two, Three strikes you're out!

My items very clearly state that offers below 75% of my asking price will get auto rejected... He did it not once, not twice, but thrice!

Now note that I offer "free shipping" on my items (it's about 75 cents for postage and materials)... so effectively he was offering me $3.25 for my Walker, and $1.50 and $1.75 respectively for my silver quarters.
