Every once in a while I buy a coin sent with a big assortment of stamps for postage. I'm assuming that these sellers are getting them for less than face. I have found auctions of such stamps on e-bay. Are there pitfalls? (I apologize if this is not correct forum).

Yes and some coin dealers have shops where people bring in stamps. Stamp collecting has gone down hill and most mid-century stamps were horde in large numbers. Lots of dealers will buy old stamps at 50% face and then use/sell them.

Make sure the seller states they have the gum, otherwise you have to apply glue to them. The stamps I sell on ebay all have full gum and are guaranteed to be usable as postage. (I just don't have any listings right now because I am traveling to see my new granddaughter and don't want to be burdened with ebay listings.) I will have some more listed in July.

This would explain the outrageous coverage on a package I got a couple of weeks ago -- as many as would fit on both sides of the envelope, and USPS still had to add a sticker for the balance.

I've received a couple like that loaded from edge to edge with stamps, and I find them quite refreshing.

The other pitfall is that you don't want many low denomination stamps as they take up envelope real estate rapidly, as has been pointed out.

"KHatt" hit the nail on the head. Pretty interesting any time I get a package totally plastered in stamps.

You can generally buy unused U.S. postage for around 60% of face from certain stamp dealers, and since I don't have the extra time to sit around and count out and affix stamps, I've found a dealer who will do all that and I get the prestamped envelopes for 75% of face
