Hi guys,
Not sure if this is the most appropriate forum for this or not but...

I'm on vacation and at my brother house and he is a big flea market picker. He showed me a couple coins he got from a guy who "didn't know what he had, my brother doesn't really know either, and looking through my books I'm not sure I even know about this so I came here to let you guys tell us if we got anything or not. My Red Book doesn't a price for this coin, just that the mintage was 2,000,000. What do you guys think? Is it real? Is it valuable?

It's definitely not an 1885 S since those don't exist, it's also definitely not an 1885 as that was a proof only year. At best it's a common date that had it's date altered, but usually they're just completely fake.

nope. the 1885 Trade dollar was only minted in proof in philadelphia. yours is an 1885-S which was never minted by the U.S. government. you can pick one of these for $7 if you google 1885 Trade dollar.

a real one would run you millions, and a real 1885-S Trade dollar would be a tremendous numismatic find. not likely though.

be careful at flea markets.

It's a pretty poor cast fake.

All 1885s are type 2 reverses, this looks like a 1.5.
