I really like this kind of forum. First, I have no problem asking stupid questions because no one knows me. Second, I don't have to believe anything anyone here says. Lastly, there is nothing to be gained by misleading someone. I feel like I have a e-family that cares about my collection. The fact that I am drawn to coins means that there is something in my personality that other coin people have too. My natural tendency to carefully handle coins, and to be wary about selling is something you all share. It's like when two retired soldiers meet, they are brothers before they know each other's name. I enjoy this place already.

Welcome Robocoin. I wish you the best with your newly inherited coin collection. As Super Dave stated:

You have just the right attitude, robocoin. You will do well.

I have found this forum very diverse in many ways topics, personalities & opinions. Enjoy the pursuit of determining your coins values. It appears you already are!

The difficult decision will be - do you part with inheritance or hold on to enjoy them yourself and pass them on for another person to enjoy as an inheritance. Obviously your circumstance will determine your action. In any event you are doing the correct thing by 1st taking your time seeking advice and above all handling and caring for the coins in a careful manner. Best of luck!

My condolences on your Mothers passing. It's very hard losing a loved one. You have a great inheritance there. My own personal sugestion would be to visit the coin photography forum here, get some good close pics, then as everyone else has said already, get them in airtite holders. I would say stash them in a safety deposit box for the time being, hang out here for a bit on the forum. learn about them and why your Mom saved them all these years. Then if you want to sell them because coin collecting hasn't bitten you, you'll be MUCH better armed for the world of auction houses and such. Personaly, I'd keep em all, but I AM a bit of a hoarder!

to the forum, and I'm glad you feel at home and comfy here!

Welcome to the forum robocoin. You will not find a more family friendly forum on the internet, nor will you find more people willing to help you on this endeavor. Those are some excellent pictures posted just recently, although the white balance is a little off. Nothing to worry about right now for sure.

Having said that, the two most recent coins you posted are monsters in their own right. Absolutely beautiful. Take your time. You have a collection to rival most already, and the value is somewhat astronomical in my opinion. Ask any and all questions. We are here to help, and we truly enjoy doing just that.

First of all I was only asked (by the executor) to determine ballpark value so the estate of my mom can go equally to 4 brothers. Each brother has legal rights to 1/4 of the value of the collection. I will try to convince my brothers to let me keep it (in lieu of equivalent cash or property).

You all have made me feel guilty about having a VALUABLE collection dropped in my lap. I imagine most of you looking at some of these at a show and wishing you could afford them. If I can convince my brothers to let me keep them I will probably put a few duplicates up for auction here.

I had no idea looking at coins with a magnifying glass would be so therapeutic. I want to take them all out again and look at them again.

I was wondering if you all could clue me in on how to find collectable coins that aren't already collected. Anyway look at my pictures. I will try upload a few pictures a couple times a week. I neet to hone my photo skills.
Rest in Peace

Your photos are looking much better than the first batch! I would have suggested you take a better pic of the 93-s, but I'd personally be afraid to touch that coin at all...lol. BTW, you said you shipped it away for certification. Might I ask to which company? That coin alone is probably well worth more than my entire collection. Anyways, I'd also like to see the 3-legged buffalo and $3 gold if you can take pics of them.

It is great to have such a strong collection right off the bat, but my deepest condolences for the loss of your mother. Nothing can replace that. I do hope that you can convince your brothers to let you be the caretaker of the coins, as it seems you are doing a good job of equipping yourself with the resources and knowlege to properly care for them.
I'm not sure what you mean about collectable coins that aren't already collected.....Do you mean finding someone who sells coins? You can start with a reputable dealer. I purchase a lot from ebay, but it is easy to be ripped off if your not sure what you are doing(I initially lost some significant money with poor choices of coins on ebay). I would honestly recommend that you just spend more time learning the coins you have and reading books.

take care,
John

Absolutely nothing to feel guilty about! It is more jealously than anything on our part in general, and the sheer excitement for you in what you have acquired. Of course, no inheritance can equal the loss of a loved one, but as you mentioned, in this circumstance, at least it's being therapeutic for you.

Again, do not feel guilty. It is absolutely 100% excitement for you on my behalf. It seems like your mother decided to collect the keys to quite a few series, plus they all seem to be in super condition. I would honestly suggest you have all of the keys sent in to a TPG, PCGS to be honest for value/retail sake.

Ok, we need more pics....
Rest in Peace

Wow! Gorgeous key buffalo! Yes, I hope you know I was kidding about the inquiry. I'm sure some of us feel a tinge of jealousy, but we are happy to have another one to enter into our passion. And what an exciting way to enter!

First I would suggest sending your coins in to be certified and graded. I would suggest ANACS since they will certify and grade your coins even if they have a "problem," for example, if they have been cleaned.

Once the coins come back graded the value will be really easy to determine. You'll also have peace of mind knowing that they are authentic. It's entirely possible that your mother unknowingly acquired counterfeits, although we have no reason to believe so at this point.

As far as feeling guilty about your inheritance, I'm sorry if anyone made you feel that way. There is NOTHING to feel guilty about. I wouldn't trade my mother for all the treasure in the world. A sizable inheritance would be little consolation. So regardless of the excitement many express about your coins, I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say we're truly sorry for your loss.

Here is the ANACS website.

I don't feel TOO guilty. But I always try to see things from different points of view. When I first started getting responses I thought to myself, there are people responding to my questions who may never have the opportunity to own some of the coins I was given.

On the other hand you all have been so excited about my "find" it has been contagious. I will continue to hone my photography skills. I don't know a lot about forums. The "thread" we are communicating in now ( inherited coins, value unknown) was created by me, is this going to be permanent, or do the topic forums disappear after time.

I gues what I'm trying to say, if I post pictures here a few a week will you all be able to access them, or should I put the photos somewhere else?
