My girlfreind came across this today. It was her great grandfather's and we are trying to figure out what exactly this is. The coloring of the pic is off from what it actually looks like... Image: 1.jpg50.77 KB

Hi,
It is German. A 1920's issue during the inflationary period in Germany.
This 1 million mark note probably bought you dinner in that error.
It looks like it is in good condition so it's worth would be around the $10AU mark.

I believe these notes are also referred to as Notgeld. During this period, notes and a few coins (some on leather and base metals) were produced reflecting the inflationary rates. If I remember correctly, a loaf of bread in this period cost around 100,000 marks or more.

You are right Susan.
There is however a difference between notgeld and the not above.
In short the difference is: Notgeld was printed by the individual states and generally were more colourful. They were printed on anything from paper, coins, cloth like material and even clay.
Banknotes were printed by the main government. They were genally much plainer in design and displaed the hallmarks of the governemt (the eagle can be found generally on the bottom left or right hand corner).
