Anyone Interested In Turkish Banknotes? (Or Coins)

If your sharing your interest, that is no way against the rules. I for one like other countries bank notes. I have SEVERAL countries bank notes. I mainly collect Western Europe (non-euro) and Kuwait, Saudi, Iraq and some Iran. I typically "collect" a note from each country I visit.

I don't think thre is anything unsafe, but it is probably the extra-caution of the officers.

Anyway, you're right about the currency, until last year 1 $ was 1.350.000 TL. That's why the currency was rearranged so the "million" part no longer exists, now we have "new" Turkish liras :). The Blue note in my first message is our biggest current note (100 YTL)

The coins in the first message are not circulating coins bur minted for some specific occasions. For instance, the silver one up there is for the Football (or soccer as you name it:) Cup that will take place in Germany this summer.
The gold one is for 100th anniversary of Galatasaray SK.

Let me showyou some circulating coins; this one is 1 YTL= ~0,75 US$


and this one is 50 Yeni Kurus (Kurush: Turkish cents)


I frankly don't have any idea how you can get these overseas, if you have any friends over here, you can ask them to bring you a set. Otherwise it costs much to have it shipped.

I will try to find some sites with pics, or I'll show some pictures.
This is just the historical part of the Turkish Republic. The Ottoman Empire period is completely a different story


Year 1931, Turkish Republic has its first banknotes.

The currency is minted by the British in that time.

Smallest banknote is 1 TL, biggest is 1,000 TL.

Not everyone can see that 1,000 TL it's like a small fortune.

1 Turkish Lira = 0.47 USD

Year 1942, 2. Generation money is minted by the British and the German.

2.nd President Mr. Ismet Inonu is on the currency.

Smallest banknote is 50 Kurus, biggest one is 1,000 Lira.

1 Turkish Lira = 0.77 USD

Year 1947, 3. generation banknotes are circulating.

No more Kurush banknotes. America is added to the list to print Turkish money.

1 Lira is no more, smallest banknote is 2.5 Lira, biggest one is 1,000 Lira.

Year 1952, Ataturk is back on the face of currency.

Turkey can manufacture its own currency.

1 Lira is out of circulation. 1,000 TL is still "the king".

The design has changed.

Kingdom of 1,000 TL banknote is still on, but everyone can have it.

50 years' reign of 1000 TL banknote is over.

Now there's 5000 TL.

5,000 and 10,000 Lira notes are out of currency.

Year 1997, 1,000 was the king for 60 Years but 1,000,000 could last for only 2 Years

20,000 Lira is out too.

1 TL = 0.0000048 USD

Year 1999, 50,000 is history too.

Year 2001, sad but true; 20,000,000 is circulating. 100,000 is off the market.

Year 2005, six zeroes are off the tail. We now call the TL the "new" TL; YTL.

All the currency is re-minted. We now have 50 and 100 YTL, and Kurus is back.

1 YTL = 0.74 USD

that is actually not such an amazing thing.
If you noticed, that is due to reduction in face value of the money.
In 2005 the government changed 1.000.000 TL to be 1 YTL. So the value of Turkish currency was changed virtually, but the real value remained the same.
The improvement is actually only from 0.69 USD to 0.74

Yep, That's him.

We have Mustafa Kemal Ataturk on almost every coin or banknote.
Some exceptions I know are;
Most of the commemorative coins,
Some currency notes had other famous Turks on the reverse.
Between 1942 and 1952, 2nd president Ismet Inonu was on the currency.
