I'm posting this as I'm still to understand what exactly is this item,a thaler,a medal or a show thaler. Most of the auctioneers are presenting it as a medal, a lot less as a 1 1/2 thaler and even less as a show thaler.I bought it as 1 1/2 Sede Vacante thaler, but I'm 99% sure it's more likely to be a medal. Some info would be really helpful!

First, I will say it's a beautiful piece. Since I'm a geek for imagery of saints, it has a nice rendering of St. Paul, and on top of that looks like a sort of lexicon of heraldry for the states that made up the HRE. Super!
Looking at CoinArchives, I see exactly the pattern you mention. Kunker, who I am guessing is pretty authoritative when it comes to German items, calls this a silver medal, and similar types issued in later dates (1761 and 1801) are also called silver medal by every other auction house that has one listed or sold on that site.
Sounds pretty convincing to me.

tdziemia !Obviously it'd be hard to argue with Kunker's opinion as they're some of the best in the bussines and at the top of my list when it comes to coins. On the other hand ,Stack&Bowers presents it as show thaler, whilst Katz and AB Philea as a thaler.I might have seen the piece in the Standard catalogue 1701-1800 if I'm not wrong!I bought it from the last auctioneer mentioned as an unsold lot for 160$ total so I'm pretty happy even if it wasn't a circulating coin but a medal. It is a medal with the weight of 1 1/2 thaler. I wouldn't rely on Katz descriptions - their auctions are terrible and are filled with many inaccuracies. AB Philea I am familiar with but I wouldn't rely on their descriptions too heavily. As for Stacks, if they are calling this ( https://auctions.stacksbowers.com/l...iew/1-1LA0A) a medal, then the it should also apply to your piece. Heritage made the same error by the way. German auctions consider this a medal. Another clue is the absence of a Davenport number.

Beautiful piece! I think you made a good purchase. I agree with the earlier post that it is not officially a taler since Davenport did not recognize it. I use the Zepernick classification for all these german states sede vacante issues. The niche fascinates me. As for your piece, I vote medal. I have heard it called a medallic taler also, which is simply saying it is a taler sized metal. Technically it is a 1 taler sized piece since the larger munster 1719 1.5 size piece is this one: https://coins.www.collectors-societ...px?sc=287453

My knowing absolutely nothing about this coin just means you have a very beautiful piece for what appears to be an excellent cost.
