Hello Wanted to get some opinions or ideas—would like to buy some lots of coins to go through—-i see lots on ebay but figure they have been already gone through even though they may say not—any websites or places where you can do this and maybe find something of value—or places you can get good deals like maybe coin dealers or do pawn shops or what ever—thanks

What kind or denominations of coins are you looking to go through?

ebay is alright if you are looking for dirt cheap, interesting coins. I used to do a lot of buying in the "World coins - lots" section... hundreds of auctions ending per day, 365 days a year. Yeah the odds of finding a valuable or silver coin are slim, but the deals are there. Bottom line is, all lots have been gone through, at least for the big stuff. Sometimes something will slip through the seller's attention, and sometimes you get lucky enough that nobody else notices it too. I have never looked in a pawn shop for coins, and all the coin shops I have ever looked at sell even the junk bin stuff for outrageous prices. Case in point - my LCS has a few junk bins - Cull Buffalo nickels for $1 each, cull Indian cents for $2 each, and a bucket of essentially world pennies and nickels for 25 cents each.

Ive had my share of good finds on ebay. It takes time, research, and of course, luck.

When I was buying LWCs in bulk, I first started by a Google search for bulk Wheat cents. Think I went through 30 pages or so, most repeats, but every now and again a new site came up to check out. I played the game, 33,000+ bulk purchases(500, 1,000, 5,000 counts), of all of that, one batch may have been an "unsearched" (by seller) lot. A lot of buying, a lot of absolute trash. As Finn said, only if something slipped past the seller, very unlikely. I still buy a few random lot auction buys, more for sentiment than serious, just too much junk out there. If your prepared to jump, go very big, 5000 counts. Oh, BTW, sorry I can't wave the ebay banner, nothing but really bad crap there, no "luck" whatsoever, on pretty much any level, 1-5000, or denomination either!

Any seller that tells you his lot or rolls are un-searched is probably lying. I'm sure there are exceptions but that's rare.

It would help to get an idea of what exactly the OP is looking to buy. From my experience, ebay is awful for buying any classic US coins of value, but a great venue for selling. World coins are alright, but you really need to dedicate a few hours a day to sifting through dozens or hundreds of listings for the diamond in the rough. I've fallen for tricky listings (show a lot of 200+ coins, but in the description they disclaim that you only get 5 "random" coins from that lot), and have gotten carried away on stupid bidding wars. I also have won silver for under melt, current pocket change for under exchange, and a few rare numismatic items for a fraction of their catalog value. Ancient coins have been the sweet spot for me; they are bountifully available, popular, and more interesting than most modern coins. More recently, I have actually had good success buying coins from major auction houses to sell on ebay... it's a steep learning curve and takes a lot of self control, however. If you are looking for a trustworthy source to buy coins from any part of numismatics, you can participate in buying from sales at 50 posts, or sell at 250(?) posts.

https://www.shopgoodwill.com/Item/53278390 ... last year, the smaller lots were going for ~20 U$D per pound, and the larger lots (like this one, at 10 lbs) would go for ~15 U$D per pound. Good hunting! Cheers, /s/ ikeyPikey

What your looking for is something most coin collectors will go out of their way to locate, which really is just about impossible . Believe it or not the best unsearched lots are rolls and boxes of rolls from the bank. Go the 50/50 route . 50% bank wrapped and 50% customer wrapped . This costs nothing but face .

It is possible to buy large lots of junk silver and pick out coins that have some value. I bought $100 face in Walkers at melt and found a whole bunch of coins worth $8, $10, or even $12 each that I sell individually. Just because something is "junk" doesn't mean it is worth only melt, simply that it is not worth the seller's time to parse it out individually. I cherrypicked it and sold the rest for melt.
I also know a dealer that bought a bag of wheaties from another dealer. Her husband told her, you bought them from a dealer, don't bother going through them as you won't find anything worth your time. She found a '22 weak D and sent it off to PCGS. So, yes its all searched, but with varying skill levels.

If you find a coin shop that sells junk silver you can cherry pick it for condition, for varieties, for errors, etc. And then extrapolate that out to lots from ebay or other venues if you wish. But the great thing about your LCS is you don't have to buy before you look.

My LCS sell world coins at 5.00 per pound in ten pound bags All the silver had been picked out I know this because I am the one who did it. And they sell wheats in 5000 count bags no key dates unless it slipped by them.

Go to the bank and order coin. On a good year, I ordered at least $25,000 in different denoms.
