Hi Everyone

How does everyone practice their grading skills ?

Do you only practice grading the coins that you physically collect ?

How do you check your progress ?

Im just wondering if there is any sage advice out there, for grading techniques and then for the testing of the skill ?

I mean I can set here and grade my coins but how do I know Ive done a good job ?

I grade my coins then when I think I have it right I will take a coin to Houston Numistmatics and they will usually shoot my grade down in flames so I will then buy my boxes of flips or 2x2 and go home to try again...
Or recently I use the Coin grading section here but I still need some work on my pics as has just been shown by Bobby.

Does the pic that Bobby posted more closely resemble the color of the coin?

Most of my nickles that I have had in the 2x2's have a slight golden color to them .

Thats good nohope, a person needs to practice and then test that practice with other collectors.

I used to bring them into my bathroom and look at them with the light off and when it was just beginning to get "dusky" out. You'd be amazed how easy it is to see rubs when the lighting is extremly low.

I have never heard of playing with coins in the bathroom now theres a new one. My family already think me strange. Just think what they are going to say when I tell them I'm off to the bathroom to play with my coins........

You must first creat a shock and awe deversion. Tell them that Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones beat out the entire world last year with concert earnings.

The sad part is, it's true.
Rest in Peace

Hi! I can't look at a coin without taking a mental shot at grading. I have submitted hundreds of coins for grading and usually write down what I think they are and compare that to the grades when they come back.
I have a tough time with the AU58-MS62 range. I think many share this problem. It takes a keen eye to catch a "slider" on a regular basis, specially from a photo. This is an area I need to work on. Mike

At the SF ANA, I went to the heritage area and sat down and looked at all of their Pan pac's (silver ones of course-alas!). It was very useful to examine 8 or so (can't recall the exact number) under a handglass with TPG grades consecutively.
