I have long debated about posting about this 1953 D LWC as to whether this is chemically altered or is the product of a defective planchet. The area in question is raised telling me that this isn't a stain and doesn't appear to flow on the right side of the bust like you would think liquid would flow if chemically altered. And, if you are unsure as I am, you ask. So, I am asking for insight as to what you all think. The reverse although darkened does not show the same raised lines. I am leaning toward chemical damage ( PMD), rather than a defective planchet.

Altered surface. If you've see stock rolls of copper, they are free from contaminates. They are pretty clear. So to me your coin looks like its had a tough life.

It's hard to tell from photos alone, but I've had a couple looked like that turned out to be some sort of glue or some type of melt.. After futzing around with 'em for a while I was able to lift and peel some places.. Have you given that a try, Jim..?

So hard to tell from pics. It lived a rough life for sure. I wonder if perhaps there was something stuck to the surface at some time protecting those surfaces and was removed prior to it crossing paths with you.

It's been chemically altered. You can see where the sticky residue is.
