i have a love/hate relationship with ICCS..i don't hate them, but they aren't my favorite . I understand every TPG has their flaws and I think I've been very accepting of that when it comes to them...but this is ridiculous! it's as if they are a basement slabber sometimes. they seem to not know their coin finishes at all aside from the blatantly obvious ones such as 1937 mirror coins..although I've seen them screw up matte and mirror designations too! this rant is caused by some recent submissions by my business partner/friend and I. from our submissions alone, I now have a whopping 10 1967 coins that are obviously prooflike which they have graded as specimen! all of which were taken from the original PL plastic mint sets and then sent in marked as PL! it's getting crazy and if that's not enough, we just got back a submission where he's graded BU 1965 and 1966 coins as prooflikes..and this is worse than the 1967 PL/SP issue I mentioned above as these are easily identified as mint states with cameos. the difference between a 1965 or 1966 PL and MS are obvious even if the coin has a cameo, yet they've graded different coins with identical toning from the same sets as different finishes. for just a taste of this recent submission, a 1966 quarter and half were sent in, the quarter was a nice MS with cameo..but is easily identified as mint state..both coin with the same toning and obviously from the same source, yet the quarter got PL and the half got MS..you'd think for the country's main TPG, they'd be able to differentiate a PL from a SP and know that a cameo doesn't mean a PL coin I'll try get you guys some images of some of these coins later on.. Feel free to call me Will.

Sounds crazy frustrating. Even if they were wrong, some consistency would be nice. I'd really like to see some examples of what you're dealing with. I've never dealt with a TPG directly. is there a customer service department that you can voice your frustrations to?

That makes me wonder about my recent 1953 submission of a wrapped PL set where all the coins were graded as MS. Not impossible as many MS coins made their way into early sets but...

TheCoinHunter..sounds interesting..i would post them if I were you for opinions..or shoot me an email, I'm pretty good at telling the different finishes Chafemasterj...nope..it's a father and son operation who from my understanding are more of the my way or the highway type..for example they don't have slabs or a website even though it's widely asked for.

I completely agree. I've found recently that they are also getting their cameo attributions wrong as well (no cameo where there clearly is one).
I once cracked a 2-letter cert SP-63 large cent out of an ICCS holder, hoping for an upgrade, and got MS63, AU55 and MS64. I had to send them a photo of the original cert holder before they finally recertified it as SP-63.
How can you mess up SP vs MS vs AU?

How can you mess up SP vs MS vs AU? Because the person who graded the original SP is not grading anymore... Brian Cornwell knows his strikes... but his eyes have gotten pretty bad in recent years. So, Scott is the main grader now...

Pre-1954, the sets were made up of what ever tehy had on hand when someone mailed and asked for one. Most of the 1953 card sets mailed out were business strikes ... with an occasional SP included. Sean Issacs of Allaince Coin has a good blog post on this: https://alliancecoin.wordpress.com/...-a-mint-set/
