I thought I'd share this neat way to browse the Standard Catalog of World Coins on your smartphone.
You can already buy pretty much any coin related book and download it to your phone via the Kindle app. The
Red Book, Cherrypickers guides, etc. But for reasons unknown, Krause still has not made the SCOWC series available as a directly downloadable e-book yet.
But wait! There is a way to get the books on your phone, complete with functioning bookmark tabs and all!
It's a little complicated but I'll explain it as best as I can. To get the books on your phone, You need:
A Smartphone. (I guess you could use a flip phone if you have really good eyesight?)
The Adobe Acrobat Reader app on your smartphone. (free.)
iTunes on your computer. (for iPhone users.)
The CD version of the SCWOC book you want to read. (Available for purchase at
Amazon, directly from the Krause site, or elsewhere. Usually costs less than the actual book.)
200MB to 700MB of space on your Smartphone per book you want. (space required varies depending on the book, even in digital form these things are behemoths!)
And the ability to connect your smartphone to your computer via USB cable.
(The following tutorial is for iPhone users, I imagine the process would be similar for android users.)
So let's say you want to put the Standard Catalog of World Coins, 1901-2000 edition on your phone, here are the steps:
1. Buy the SCOWC 1901-2000 CD. (Usually cheapest on
Amazon.)
2. Run the disc on your computer, drag and drop the .PDF file onto your desktop to transfer the file from the CD to your computer.
3. Download the Adobe Acrobat Reader app to your iPhone. This is the app you'll be using to both store and read the books on your phone. (Other reader apps work too but this has worked the best for me.)
3. Connect your iPhone to the computer and open iTunes on your computer. Through iTunes, find the Adobe app you put on your phone and click it. You'll now be able to send files from your PC to your phone and into the Adobe app.
4. Drag and drop the .PDF book into the Adobe app in iTunes, and it will transfer the book to your phone. (Optional, rename the file "Standard Catalog of World Coins 1901-2000 so you'll recognize it on your phone.)
And that's it! The book should now be on your iPhone, all 2000 pages worth. You can use the bookmark button in the Adobe app to navigate to any selected country in seconds, and you can pinch and zoom to see the images and prices clearly even on smaller phones.
I hope this guide helps. It's baffling to me why Krause would release their books on CD but not make them available for download directly. At least this method works well.
Now for my next tutorial, "How to pretend you're checking your text messages at the coin store when you're really checking the SCOWC book to find out if that Queen Victoria Canadian Cent is a rare date or not." First you... oh, you already know how to do that? Alright, never mind.
