Would this item even have gold content or would it just be some brass item?

It looks like it had a loop or has one atop for use with a ribbon or chain. It would be a St George medal of some kind. What is on the other side?

Not a token, but looks like a forgery. However, I stand to be corrected, the coin could be degraded due to wear.

The tag could be a casting sprue, or a jewelry mount for suspension (or used for both reasons). Your choice to file it off, I would, but many would choose not to do that.

Hard to check for accurate weight, due to the tag.
Genuine sovereigns weigh 7.988 grams.
Genuine Half Sovereigns weigh 3.994 grams.

What is the exact diameter?
