If slightly magnetic plated with nickel, maybe tin, zinc even, but yes, isn't silver, but plated.

This is just an altered coin that's been plated. It's Post Strike Damage (happened after it left the U.S. Mint).
Errers and Varietys.

Yes, you can see the copper from the cent where the plating has worn off.

with everyone else. It's plated. Back in the 60s and 70s it was a common science project in high schools. I read here on the CCF that they used a variety of metals.sometimes they even plated them with mercury.

Thought so - So not the Hope Diamond! - Anyone want to buy a plated 1955 penny? We will start the bidding at 1 million - no - 1 Billion dollars!

Thanks all. I just started collecting - I didn't buy this coin just found it in my spare change. I collect mostly Canadian Silver coins and Sterling items from estate auctions. I am recently retired and it gives me something to do. Nice to have people like you for advice and expertise! Thanks again.

Why do people think they have something just because it is a certain year, a certain color, a certain grade or a certain value. Reality is that 99% of the time it is worth what it says on the back of the coin.
Coin grades: Sellers raise the coin two grades. Buyers lower it by two grades. Why? Greed. When their balloon finally lands, then they will sell the coin. And neither will be happy with the deal.

There probably are 1955 silver cents, cent struck on a dime planchet. This isn't one of them. (a cent struck on a silver dime planchet would weigh 2.5 grams and part of the design would be missing because the dime planchet is smaller in diameter than the cent dies.)

It may just be painted or nail polish added to the coin. But it's not a natural silver color as already mentioned, you can see the copper color on the coin.
