I bought a large lot of coins and this interesting non-coin object was among them. It is 28mm in diameter (not including the extension) and weighs 26g. Composition is uncertain, but seems to be lead or pot metal. At first glance I was inclined to call it a fishing weight and throw it in the tackle box. However, it has what appears to be Japanese script above an 8 on one side and on the other side Olympic rings and what appears to be a whale or flying fish. That suggests something more unusual.

At this point I'm just curious as to what it is. Any thoughts welcomed.

Thanks!

There was a guy named Hironoshin Furuhashi who performed as a swimmer in the Olympics in 1952, and because he set world records at the Japanese national championships, he was nicknamed Flying Fish, which is kind of what the animal above the rings looks like, but I could be wrong. I have no idea What the 8 could mean though.

Thank you so much for that information! After stellar performances in all swimming categories in the 1940s, Hironoshin Furuhashi did not do as well in the early 1950s after he contracted dysentery. Nevertheless, he placed 8th at the 1952 Olympics.

I think the next steps are translating the text (Japanese I presume) on the object and seeking out a collector forum associated with Olympic medals. Anyone know of such a thing?
