I started really looking through my change about 4 months ago, and have a few coins that I need direction on, I am definately in the beginning stages of becoming a collector, but enjoy looking at the beautiful variants of this coin. To CCF! Unfortunately, this isn't an error. This is Post Strike Damage (happened after it left the U.S. Mint). This is called Zinc Rot. It happens when the Copper plating breaks, causing the Zinc core to get exposed. Over time, air reaches to the Zinc, causing the Zinc to slowly rot and break down. As we know, Zinc isn't tough material.

There is a thin copper plate over a zinc interior.

The copper has been lost in several spots, and the zinc beneath is corroded.
